Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)

Titanium dioxide pigment can be found in virtually all paint formulations; it provides the required opacity to the coating. The European Commission classified TiO2 as a carcinogen by inhalation in 2020; the classification applies only to mixtures in powder form containing 1% or more of TiO2 which is in the form of incorporated in particles with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 µm.

This classification has no impact on the paints used in coil coating as they are used in the wet-form and not as powders. However, due to the potential for dust being created when cutting of sanding prepainted metals, care should be taken in these situations to avoid exposure. Further details are given in the ECCA publication “Cutting and Handling of Prepainted Metals”.
